We specially invite Dr. Shi Meiwu, the first person to complete the development project of high-performance vinylon and its textiles, to talk about how he made vinylon an ideal working fabric with strong and durable properties

host: Dr. Shi, although vinylon fiber is soft and comfortable and suitable for making clothes, its disadvantages are poor dyeing and wrinkle resistance. How did you improve it and find its suitable use

Shi Meiwu: any fiber has its advantages and disadvantages. As a kind of fiber, its disadvantages may be more valued by engineers and technicians, so as to make good use of this material. The disadvantage of vinylon is that the dyeing effect is not bright and the wrinkle resistance is not very good. In the 1960s, vinylon was vigorously developed as the first domestic synthetic fiber variety to ease the land competition between grain and cotton. In the 1970s, people also wore vinylon or vinylon clothing. Because its appearance (color, straightness) was not ideal, it was finally eliminated by the later developed polyester, and vinylon was gradually driven out of the field of fiber consumption. In order to optimize the quality, performance and value of customers' products a few years ago, the army also used Uygur cotton bed sheets. Later, these parts are relatively easy to be damaged and replaced by polyester cotton bed sheets

the use of vinylon is slowly fixed in cement reinforced fibers, water-soluble fibers, special reinforced fibers for currency securities, etc. Abroad, there are also high-strength fibers spun by gel spinning and other methods, and the strength can reach 15cn/dtex. These special vinylon can not be used as conventional fiber varieties. For example, the strength of cement reinforced vinylon can also reach more than 10cn/dtex, but it is not resistant to hot water and cannot withstand dyeing and finishing

however, any material has its suitable use. For fibers that are not bright in color and not very neat in appearance, you can also find a more suitable use occasion. For example, work clothes, military and armed police training clothes, etc., do not necessarily need to have a particularly bright appearance. Besides, vinylon has many advantages

Shi Meiwu: the main advantages of vinylon are: vinylon may become a fiber with high strength in general textile fibers. Because from the theoretical strength calculation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), it is second only to para aramid (the typical variety is the familiar Kevlar fiber, which is used to make bulletproof clothing, but it is a special fiber, which is expensive). Although vinylon needs to seal off many hydroxyl groups of PVA to form the structure of polyvinyl formal, it is still possible to achieve high strength. Just because PVA has a large number of hydroxyl groups, it still has a lot of hydroxyl groups after being made into vinylon, which has good water absorption and comfort. It can be said that PVA is the kind of synthetic fiber whose water absorption and comfort are closest to that of cotton fiber. Vinylon has a good industrial foundation in China. There were more than 10 vinylon plants in China, and several plants producing soybean protein fiber were also built a few years ago. In essence, they are also vinylon plants, so they have a good industrial foundation, and the newly-built plants have better equipment conditions. Vinylon is rich in resources and relatively low in cost. After being made into functional vinylon, it has high cost performance

Shi Meiwu: according to its advantages and disadvantages, it is obvious that vinylon is particularly suitable for making tooling fabrics. Because the tooling fabric does not need a particularly bright and bright tone, nor does it need a particularly crisp appearance. And it can be blended with other fibers, and special dyeing and finishing processes can be used to achieve the chromatography, color depth, gloss and crisp wrinkle resistance suitable for tooling fabrics. Of course, this refers to the high-strength vinylon that has been gradually developed through procurement to achieve higher strength, wear resistance and dimensional stability, so as to meet the use requirements of tooling

host: before the introduction of vinylon tooling fabrics, what fibers are usually used for tooling fabrics in the world

Shi Meiwu: the work clothes fabric mentioned here refers to the ordinary work clothes fabric used in the working environment of general industrial and mining enterprises, which is used to resist friction and collision, prevent oil contamination, and play a general protective role for the human body, including the military and police daily combat training clothing, rather than the protective clothing fabric with special functions (such as bullet proof, fire prevention, poison prevention, etc.)

foreign countries often use nylon and cotton blended fabrics as ordinary work clothes, because nylon is more wear-resistant, and the existence of cotton fiber can provide moisture absorption and comfort. Due to the relative shortage of nylon resources in China, polyester cotton blended fabrics are mostly used. In some high-end applications, there are also inverted proportion polyester cotton, namely CVC fabric, which has higher cotton content than polyester and better comfort. Cotton is also used in some occasions. The original training clothing fabric of our army is also polyester/cotton 65/35 blended fabric. In order to improve its strength and wear resistance, reinforcing ribs are also embedded in the fabric with polyester filament along the longitude and weft directions, but the use fastness still can not meet the requirements

host: it is understood that this project has trial produced more than 40 batches of nearly 10 specifications of yarn. What are the technical requirements for spinning yarn? What kind of yarn factory can spin it

Shi Meiwu: the main difficulty of this project is still in fiber manufacturing. There are some tricks in spinning processing, but it is not difficult. There are no new requirements for hardware facilities, but the characteristics of vinylon should be taken into account in process design. With some adjustments in process parameters, production can be smooth. The yarn containing high-strength vinylon has been produced for tens of thousands of tons, and there is no big technical problem. Generally, cotton mills should be able to produce yarn containing high-strength vinylon. There are also sock factories that purchase high-strength vinylon. It is said that they want to use the good wear resistance of high-strength vinylon to produce socks, especially socks for outdoor sports. According to the feedback, they are very successful

but this kind of low-temperature device is very easy to be damaged and impractical host: in terms of fabric varieties, the typical product launched by the project is polyester/vitamin/cotton ratio 60/20/20, 30s, which can be used for military and police summer and winter training clothes. In the process of fabric production, what technical links need attention

Shi Meiwu: in the process of fabric production, we should comprehensively consider the use requirements of work clothes. As the fabric of work clothes, we should first start from the use fastness to pursue the protective effect on the human body (for example, soldiers can climb up tall buildings with their bare hands, or slide down the walls of tall buildings with their bare hands. At this time, in addition to the soldiers' technology and physical strength, it mainly depends on the high-strength wear resistance of clothing. If it is not strong enough, soldiers will be injured). The second is to provide good permeability and comfort. Therefore, the design idea of low density roving should be adopted, taking into account the strength and permeability. In the process of dyeing and finishing, it is necessary to prevent the rapid drying of wet state at high temperature and avoid the phenomenon of hard hand feeling. Under the appropriate dyeing and finishing process, the fabric containing vinylon can still get a soft feel. At the same time, the tooling fabrics containing high-strength vinylon can still be treated with oil and water repellency, easy decontamination, antistatic and other functional finishing

Shi Meiwu: in terms of performance, since the strength of high-strength vinylon developed by us reaches 7.7 ~ 8.0cn/dtex, even a small amount of mixing can greatly improve the strength and wear resistance of the fabric. I have made fabrics containing 20% high-strength vinylon, and the number of flat abrasion resistance has reached more than 5000 times (the qualified index of flat abrasion resistance for military training clothes was only 125 times); The warp and weft strength of fabrics weighing about 200g per square meter can reach 1400 × 1000N level

in terms of comfort, taking military training clothes as an example, compared with new and old varieties, the permeability and moisture permeability of fabrics are improved under the weight of similar square meters. In addition, we have also studied and realized new dyeing and finishing processing technology, so that this fabric can withstand 95 ℃ water washing and the color fastness still meets the requirements. The acquisition of this performance can make the tooling fabric adapt to the requirements of foreign tooling operation: foreign tooling is rented by the user unit to a professional tooling service company, and the washing service is also undertaken by the tooling service company. According to the requirements of the user unit, it is rotated once a few days to send clean clothes, Change back to dirty clothes. at present, the tooling fabrics produced by using high-strength vinylon as a functional material to enhance wear resistance have been used in military and armed police training clothes, some oilfield and coal mine work clothes, and some fabrics specially developed for foreign tooling have been sold to the European market
